AMTK cars at St.Louis_July81.jpg 249.60 KB 1024x628x24(RGB)
(1) Amtrak ex-SAL and Rock Island cars at St.Louis -- July 1981
A group of retired Amtrak cars sits at the entrance to the abandoned St.Louis Union Station. I assume these were on the Amtrak bid list.
The abandoned tower was plenty busy at one time but it and the station were completely deserted. The car to the left was an ex-Seaboard 60 seat coach built by Budd in 1947.

Engines at New Orleans -- July 1976
At the engine shop a P30CH (#705), an ex-UP E9B #1916 and NOUPT SW8 #3. The E9B was unpowered -- I assume used as a steam generator ? #3 was built for and started working at NOUPT when it opened in 1954.

Conrail SW-1 #8429 at Chicago -- June 1982
#8429 helps out an unidentified train between Union Station and the shops. The bridge in the background and the open area to the left and right was the site of the B&O Grand Central Station and trackage to it (torn down in 1971). Just above the 'Conrail" on the switcher can be seen (barely) a B&O painted gondola on what trackage remained.

Santa Fe 4-8-4 #2925 "hidden" at Cleburne,Tx -- December 1977
There was big excitement in Texas when it was heard that the Santa Fe was considering their own steam program and had moved Northern #2925 to the large shops at Cleburne for evaluation. Either the restoration cost was to much or they just decided against running their own steam and the idea was scrapped. #2925 remained at Cleburne for quite a while (early 80's?) before returning to Belen and eventually to Sacramento in 1986. Anyway, on one of my Houston-Cleburne roundtrip rides aboard the Lone Star I decided to sneak around the yard to locate the engine (actually the friendly crews working the yard pointed out the location). It remained under cover -- here under one of the old wood sheds.

A couple shots at Tower 17 in Rosenberg,Tx -- about 35 miles west of Houston.
GP38 #3541 leads a southbound on the Santa Fe Southern Division, crossing the SP Sunset Route (looking west). The track to the right was the connecting track from the SP to the ATSF - mainly for the Lone Star (and former Santa Fe trains Texas Chief, California Special etc.). The track in the distance - just to the right of the tower was the SP Victoria line.

Along the Santa Fe Southern Division in Texas between Sealy and Bellville was this wig-wag out in the country. I was wondering why this was installed at this point (in the 20's or 30's?) with nothing but a driveway to the right leading to a residence by the tracks.

Commuter trains at Chicago_Sept77.jpg 218.12 KB 1024x639x24(RGB)
(1) Morning commuter trains - at Chicago -- September 1977
An fascinating array of commuter trains still arrived and departed from Union Station in 1977. Here are a few shots of the morning runs -- mostly arriving and headed to Union Station.
(1) Besides the E units at the Amtrak shops -- the Valparaiso-Chicago Conrail commuter run is arriving with an ex-Erie Lackawanna E8 (EL #825) and a slew of ex-PRR P-70 coaches. The Amtrak French Turbo train is arriving from probably St.Louis or Detroit. The other Amtrak train with new Amfleet cars waits.

Some more of the Valpo-Chicago consist with quite a few ex-PRR P-70 coaches and one ex-EL/ ex-Delaware, Lackawanna & Western lightweight coach. The ex-DL&W coach and ex-EL E-8 were last used earlier in the year on the Cleveland-Youngstown commuter train operated by Conrail for about a year after the demise of the Erie Lackawanna. A BN commuter train is arriving in the background.

(1) E-L main line after Conrail - in Ohio -- December 1976
A few pictures about 9 months after the Conrail takeover on the E-L west of Akron between Wadsworth and Sterling
Less than a year after Conrail the E-L main in Ohio was still intact. Everything was still there (double track, pole lines and working signals) except -- the +-25 trains the EL was running. I don't know if any through freights were still using the line (I'm guessing once in a while). Locals were working on part of it and one is in the block as evidenced from this signal. This is looking east just west of Wadsworth (about 14 miles west of Akron).

9 miles further west is the tower at Sterling where the B&O (Pittsburgh-Chicago) crossed the Erie. This is looking east with the B&O to the far right (the two lines paralleled each other for a bit both east and west of the crossing). Today it's hard to tell where the EL line was. CSX still operates the double track ex-B&O line with a route to the north starting here also.
