An interesting car -- ex Great Northern dome-buffet lounge Mountain View built by Budd in 1955 for the Empire Builder. Here it is on the eastbound Sunset Limited at El Paso , shortly before the Superliners took over.

LoneStar_OkCity_Dec76a.jpg 237.46 KB 1024x679x24(RGB) Prototype ATSF Hi-Level on the Lone Star. I was riding the southbound Lone Star from Chicago-Houston when I got a chance for a few shots during the stop at the Santa Fe station in Oklahoma City. One of the two experimental Hi-Level cars built by Budd for the Santa Fe in 1954 is behind the baggage car (I wish the train had moved up about a car length). Later, after being removed from service, I believe both cars were stored at Beechgrove. Also both cars were later stored at and are (or were) for sale at Illinois Transit Assembly -- www.iltransit.com

SunsetLtd_StaffordTx_Dec76.jpg 209.25 KB 1024x619x24(RGB) An interesting Sunset Limited is eastbound just entering the Stafford area outside of Houston. This was during the era when an ex-California Zephyr observation on the rear was the norm (this one was the Silver Solarium). Also, 4 sleepers were on this train (plus a deadheaded sleeper behind the engines). The first one ahead of the observation was back on home rails and its namesake train - it was #2692 - ex SP #9015 - a 10-6 sleeper - part of an order built by Budd in 1950 for the Sunset. The next sleeper was #2501 - the Blue Grove - a 10 roomette 3 double bedroom 2 compartment car built in 1947-48 by Pullman-Standard for the Santa Fe and the Super Chief. I assume Amtrak sold the compartments as double bedrooms. The Astrodome can be seen above the observation.

This train ran between Mobile and Birmingham from 1989-1995 (connected with the Crescent in Birmingham). I rode it a couple of times and it was an enjoyable ride -- heritage equipment and fast running. #201 was part of the first order of F40PH units delivered to Amtrak (numbering started at 200).

Ex-California Zephyr dome-lounge observation (with 1 drawing room and 3 double bedrooms) is on the rear of the eastbound Sunset Limited as it is being serviced at the Houston stop. The ex-CZ observation cars were often assigned to the Sunset during this period.
The car was purchased by the BNSF in 1993 and later basically redone inside and is permanently? at the headquarters in Ft.Worth -- now called the Prairie View.

Amtrak shops in Chicago_Dec75.jpg 230.58 KB 1024x668x24(RGB) No one seemed to mind my hanging out in the vestibule on the arriving Broadway Limited - so I did all the way to the station. The shops and yards had changed little in the 4.5 years since Amtrak started up - but in a few years they would be completely rebuilt. Here are the engine shops with a lot of interesting trailers scattered around on the right.
