Fun on the Santa Fe - or - why they banned friction bearings

While enjoying the parade of Santa Fe trains on the Ft. Worth - Houston/Galveston line at Cameron one evening this southbound came by with flames shooting out of one of the axles (luckily the first one ahead of the caboose). It was a little dark for pictures but tried anyway. They waited for the next southbound to come by which cut off its engines and moved the car to a connecting track.
The engine consist was interesting -- 2 GP-7, a GP"B" unit and a regular B unit.

The next 3 pictures are from this incident

One of the more odd and curious rebuilds (rebuilt in 1970) out of the Santa Fe Cleburne shops was this "rebuild" from a Baldwin VO1000 (#2220).
The hood, Baldwin engine, trucks were thrown out and a GP7 style hood (made in the shops), EMD engine, trucks were added - with difficulty - to the Baldwin frame.
Santa Fe called it a SWBLW but I read railfans called it a "Beep" (Baldwin Geep?).
Santa Fe didn't repeat this particular experiment but the engine lasted a long time. I read where it was still running around Topeka a year or two ago.

#1460 is working the south end of the Cleburne shops by the station.

Santa Fe 4-8-4 #2925 "hidden" at Cleburne,Tx -- December 1977

There was big excitement in Texas when it was heard that the Santa Fe was considering their own steam program and had moved Northern #2925 to the large shops at Cleburne for evaluation.
Either the restoration cost was to much or they just decided against running their own steam and the idea was scrapped.
#2925 remained at Cleburne for quite a while (early 80's?) before returning to Belen and eventually to Sacramento in 1986.
Anyway, on one of my Houston-Cleburne roundtrip rides aboard the Lone Star I decided to sneak around the yard to locate the engine (actually the friendly crews working the yard pointed out the location).
It remained under cover -- here under one of the old wood sheds.

Santa Fe F units at Cleburne -- February 1977

In the back part of the Santa Fe shop/yard complex at Cleburne,Tx were these F units.
Mostly B units in the shade to the left.
#288 was an F9 built in 1956 and was possibly still in service.
The units further back were probably out of service, waiting to be rebuilt into CF7 units or retired.
#237C was an F7 built in 1950.

(1) Santa Fe at Tower 17 -- October 1979

A couple shots at Tower 17 in Rosenberg,Tx -- about 35 miles west of Houston.

GP38 #3541 leads a southbound on the Santa Fe Southern Division, crossing the SP Sunset Route (looking west).
The track to the right was the connecting track from the SP to the ATSF - mainly for the Lone Star (and former Santa Fe trains Texas Chief, California Special etc.). The track in the distance - just to the right of the tower was the SP Victoria line.

(1) Santa Fe U23B and a wig-wag -- May 1976

Along the Santa Fe Southern Division in Texas between Sealy and Bellville was this wig-wag out in the country.
I was wondering why this was installed at this point (in the 20's or 30's?) with nothing but a driveway to the right leading to a residence by the tracks.

SD26 #4671 (rebuilt from SD24) and GP35 #3326 head north near Tower 55 in Ft.Worth.
From what I read most of the changes in the Santa Fe SD24 rebuild program were inside. Outside, the "hump" behind the cab was new along with the repositioning of the air tanks to the top rear of the engine.
