Both cars built in 1948 for the California Zephyr.
I'm not sure what happened to the diner after the Zephyr quit running but the Silver Sky was sold to VIA. In the course of being rebuilt - funding was cut for VIA so work stopped on the car - it was shoved outside (in Montreal) to rot away in the weather ( thanks for the info from a great site on dome cars - www.trainweb.org/web_lurker/WebLurkersDOMEmain/

DRG_SilverAspen_GrandJct_Oct76.jpg 306.56 KB 1024x647x24(RGB) (2) The Silver Aspen built for the California Zephyr in 1948 was originally a 16 section sleeper. When the sleeper business was dropping off this car was rebuilt into a 32 seat coach in 1964 (along with the other section cars). This car retained its skirts and CZ car number. The Silver Pine was also used on this train. I believe it is now owned by the Grand Canyon RR. On the westbound Rio Grand Zephyr at Grand Jct,Co.

A comparison between Rio Grandes' Alco PB1 #253 trucks and EMD trucks. Ironically, a few years before the Zephyrs last run the Rio Grande swapped out the Alco trucks for the EMD type. I always wondered what happened to those trucks -- Doyle McCormick sure could have used them on his PA restoration project. On the westbound Zephyr at Grand Jct,Co.

This was my first time following the Rio Grande in Colorado. After chasing the Rio Grande Zephyr out of Denver I ran across this freight (believe it was eastbound) with a fairly new SD40T-2 on the point. Possibly east of Hot Sulphur Springs.
