MP1796_SugarlandTx_March78.jpg 185.43 Kb 1024x500x24(RGB) MP GP7 #1796 at Sugarland,Tx. The Missouri Pacific had a small yard at Sugarland (about 20 miles west of Houston) for one purpose -- to deliver raw sugar cane (from Louisiana) to the Imperial Sugar plant. The MP originally had their own branch line here but abandoned it in the late 60's so they used the Southern Pacific Sunset Route from Houston to reach Sugarland. The UP continued the tradition till the plant closed last year after about 100 years. In the late 1800's sugar cane was grown in the area but eventually moved to Louisiana.
