AC&Y and N&W cabooses (and a few NW engines) at the ex-AC&Y shops in Akron,Ohio - Dec 1978.

In the 50's and 60's while this was still owned by the Akron Canton & Youngstown RR - the engines would have been virtually all Fairbanks-Morse .
Today - the Wheeling and Lake Erie operates this line.

N&W RS-3 #2541 and #307 near Roanoke,Va - Sept 1977.

These units were recently retired from active service (at the time) but were painted up and brought back for this excursion run to a cement plant near Roanoke.

ex - Nickel Plate coaling towers at Cleveland,Oh -- December 1977

Taken from the dirty windows of a Cleveland Transit train.
Between the towers and to the left can be seen the remnants of the electrified line that ran from Collinwood yard to Terminal Tower downtown - mainly for passenger trains - it was de-activated in the mid-50s.

A pair of RS-3 lead an excursion on the N&W main near Roanoke.
This was part of the 1977 National Railway Historical Society convention.
These two units had been retired but were painted up and returned to duty for this trip.

(1) N&W commuter train at Chicago -- September 1977

Inbound to Union Station crossing the 21st street bridge.
A year or less before, this train still operated out of Dearborn Station (at least next to it).
This was a Wabash train before the 1964 merger.

(2) N&W commuter train at Chicago -- September 1977

The consist is pulled out to the yards to wait for the evening run.
I don't believe Amtrak acquired very many (if any) N&W coaches - probably because they were Pullman-Standard - so the N&W had plenty to use on the commuter run.
An Amtrak French Turbo is headed to Union Station.
