Built by Pullman-Standard in 1952 for the Wabash (Bluebird service).
This was a great car to ride in - with 20 parlor seats. The tables in the center section still had bluebirds on them from the Wabash days.
Southern operated the car on the Southern Crescent between Atlanta and New Orleans. Here, it is ready to be put on the southbound Crescent as soon as it arrives.

SOU6903_SalisburyNC_Aug75.jpg 210.03 Kb 1250x631x24(RGB) Southern E8 #6903 on special at Salisbury,NC -- August 1975.
3 Southern E8 were temporarily pulled from Southern Crescent duties for this early morning departure of an excursion to Asheville,NC. Southern added an interesting touch to #6903 just for this trip - along with the regular diesel horn they added a steam whistle (don't know which engine they "borrowed" it from) and hooked it up to the steam boiler. Needless to say it made for some interesting alternating whistle sounds. The looks on the people at track side who came running out to see a steam engine were interesting also.
