A pair of GP9 units head east on the SP Eagle Lake-Houston branch crossing the Santa Fe Southern Division at Wallis,Tx (about 40 miles west of Houston).
This branch was abandoned and torn up a number of years ago - part of the row is now a tollroad out of Houston.
At the time of this shot the line was in rough shape with light rail (some dating back to the days of the original line - The San Antonio & Aransas Pass RR). In a surprise move SP later completely rebuilt the route with welded rail and used it as a one way (no sidings) alternative to the Sunset Route which also went thru Eagle Lake to Houston. It helped to relieve some of the congestion at the time.
Houston Metro later purchased the line and tore it up.
The Santa Fe line was used by the Lone Star.

SP business car "Alamo" (and possibly #99) at Houston - May 1975.

The Alamo was built in 1926 (the other car is probably 99).
Soon after, SP quit running the car - I believe a cracked center seal was the culprit.
Also you might remember this period when Amtrak insisted that all private cars on their trains be painted in Amtrak colors (as evidenced by the other car).Luckily they dropped the idea later.
The cars are at the Houston Amtrak station on the SP business car track. This track (slightly relocated in recent years) originally was one of the tracks into the SP Grand Central Station (torn down in the late 50's) which was just beyond the freeway in the background.

(1) SP F units and GP9 at Hearne,Tx (box camera shot-poor quality) - July 1962.

Unfortunately, I didn't take many railroad shots as a kid but here is
one with my trusty box camera (127 film?).
We were on vacation in Texas and caught these F units and what looks
to be GP9's (and maybe an Alco?) in the yard (looking south) on the SP Houston-Dallas line.
Surprisingly, the yard today is still busy although probably missing a
track or two.

SP RS-11 #2900 at the SP downtown yard in Houston -- December 1977.

#2900 was a celebrity around town not only because it was one of the last SP Alcos active in Houston but it was the demonstrator unit for the Alco RS-11 series -- built in 1956.
This yard is near the Amtrak station and was originally a coach and mail yard for the SP Grand Central Station which was here.
The SP quit using it even before the UP takeover (Houston Metro bought it).
It survives today and is only used once a year for the Ringling Brothers Circus train.

SP freight w/ ex-D&H Alco PAs (and a Century) at Victoria,Tx -- November 1978.

On their death march to Mexico - southbound on the SP Hearne-Victoria line. I caught up with them just south of Flatonia and followed them to Victoria where the units were temporarily put into a yard. I took a few pictures and will scan one every once in a while.
I was so zeroed in on the PAs that I barely noticed the third SP unit - a GP30 - there weren't many left at this time.
