UP3593atHoustonTx-Jan91-1.jpg 204.48 Kb 1024 x 677 UP #3593 (Desert Storm colors) pulling the Texas Limited at Houston,Tx - Jan 1991. A special Texas Limited this day (ribbons and everything). Southbound after leaving the Amtrak station, the train is headed down to Galveston on the UP (formerly the GH&H - MKT and MP joint line). The middle track (curving off of the train) is the SP Sunset route to New Orleans - while the other track (now abandoned) was the MKT line to Eureka Yard and west. The Texas Limited was a weekend Houston-Galveston excursion train usually pulled by 2 ex L&NW ex SP F units. The service ended a few years ago.

UP951_PExpress_atHoustonUnionSt_Aug74.jpg 122.66 Kb 1024 x 670 UP E9 #951 on the Preamble Express at Union Station in Houston,Tx -- August 1974 The Preamble Express toured the country checking out routes and facilities for the Freedom Train which would run in the first part of 1976. In this shot there are still 4 tracks and one train shed left at he station. The last regularly scheduled train from here (Lone Star) made its last run barely a month before (moved to the SP station). The car to the left is ex-Santa Fe Budd RPO #3401 - part of the then 5 car Gulf Coast Chapter NRHS museum. A short time later they moved to the NE part of town and the shed and all but one track would be removed. One track remained till a few years ago when the Astros' Enron Field was constructed - where the tracks were - and butted up to the Union Station building. From an old Ektachrome - not very sharp.

The consist backed into the station where #1078 picked it up and eventually shoved it onto the turntable. #8444 moved under its own power into the stall (forward) February 1975

This was northbound on the UP between Greely and Cheyenne (probably closer to Wyoming) on a planned Denver-Laramie roundtrip. The train never made it to Laramie due to mechanical problems that developed with the 8444. The consist limbed into Cheyenne (which the planned trip would have bypassed). UP E units were substituted to finish the run. This was the first time I had seen this engine and hanging out of the car window while #8444 was running hard was an experience! February 1975
